about
Travel across the stars on a jazz dripped odyssey of folk-funk with 'Earthling'.
The Paracosmos are old friends and collaborators, singer-songwriter Jonathan Ip and Joe Nichols (Nimbus Sextet, Acid Jazz Records), bringing together Ip’s visionary narrative world with Nichols' jazz and funk playing.
They’re joined on 'Earthling' by UK folk and soul legend Linda Lewis - the singer who lent her five octave range to Bowie’s Aladdin Sane and Cockney Rebel as well as her own untouchable ‘Lark’.
Lewis said “When I heard 'Earthling', I thought it had Stevie Wonder flavour and I liked the fact I could fit into the part of the earthling. I thought it was about me!"
With thoughtful, layered production from Nuovi Fratelli bringing a string section and densely driven rhythms, 'Earthling' is an ode to connections across cultures and a beautifully dramatic introduction to the mysterious, alluring universe of The Paracosmos.
'Earthing' has been championed by Gilles Peterson, who debuted it on his BBC 6Music show on 4th February 2023.
lyrics
Oh leave the light on my dear I’ve got other words to say to you
To play for you
There was a lady from earth who could live a million years or two
And then a few
She grew a tower in her mind
And she listened to the time go by
What will I do with all these lives
She said are they really mine
Are they really mine
Am I gonna be fine
living here in middle
Am I gonna be right
Here with these lives
So was she born in the wild, was she mothered by the world she knew
World she grew
Was she lord of the sky, and the places that it brought her to
Brought her through
Did she see wild unending rivers where the sun does rise
First of the night
Did she see wild unending summers where the gold ran dry
The creatures that speak they ask her
Are you gonna be fine
Now your life is a riddle
Are you gonna be right
Here with these lives, these lives
Suns do they set and rise
The other ones up at night say
You coulda been fine
Is this a better time
Does wandering feel alright
You coulda been fine
Keep that song up on your shoulder
Woman from Earth and you’re just right
Your road is tired and twisting but my, can you see rockets from earth
Now see the Woman from Earth
In the heavens as she yearned to, learns to fly
Suns do they set and rise
The other ones up at night say
You coulda been fine
Is this a better time
Does wandering feel alright
You coulda been fine
Keep this song up on your shoulder
Woman from earth and you’re just right
Your road is tired and twisting but my, can you see rockets from earth
Suns do they set and rise
The other ones up at night say
You coulda been fine
Is this a better time
Does wandering feel alright
You coulda been fine
Oh you could have been fine
Keep this song up on your shoulder
Woman from earth and you’re just right
Your road is tired and twisting but my, can you see rockets from earth
And late at night we’ll build a ship, my love
We’ll settle somewhere on the moon
They don’t know earthlings like the stars, my love
Yet nothing shines quite like you do

Like so many others, this came like a bolt out of the blue and, even though it's well before payday, I had to have this astonishing album on vinyl to prove it exists. The feel of the tunes makes me feel like the Impressions do, Curtis Mayfield, the big spaces and instinctive horns and stuff drifting in and out. Great grooves and I can see lots of ghosts nodding along to this with big smiles on their faces. At last! Anthony Cottrell
